John Smith is a Geordie stand-up comedian whose comedy takes ordinary situations and follows the logic until they end up somewhere considerably less ordinary.
His material combines tightly written jokes, dark observations and absurd ideas, finding comedy in relationships, everyday life and things that probably shouldn't be funny.
John first performed on the UK comedy circuit in the 2000s, reaching the finals and semi-finals of several national new-act competitions before making his Edinburgh Fringe debut at The Pleasance Courtyard in 2007.
He subsequently performed at leading UK comedy clubs alongside comedians including Michael McIntyre, John Bishop, Sarah Millican and Gary Delaney.
Then he stopped.
After more than a decade away from stand-up, John returned to comedy in 2025 and took his first solo show to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2026.
As the Fringe entered its quieter final week, John's audiences went the other way — growing from one man called Gordon to full rooms, with his final two shows the busiest of the run. Much of that growth came through local audiences returning, bringing friends and recommending the show to others.
In 2027, John takes his stand-up to Australia, performing at festivals in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, before returning to the Edinburgh Fringe.
